Our Building

Over the course of its nearly 200 year history, Central has moved locations several times in response to demographic changes in the city.  Central’s current building, located at the corner of 64th Street and Park Avenue, was constructed in 1922 as the original home for Park Avenue Baptist Church with funding provided by John D. Rockefeller, Jr.  Soon after its construction, Central purchased the building from Park Avenue Baptist and held its first service in its new home at 593 Park Avenue on Sunday, September 22, 1929, shortly before the October 1929 stock market crash.

Our building is a great asset for ministry in New York, but, like so many structures in the city, our old exterior needs to be repaired.  This is a work in progress, so we appreciate your patience as we pursue a plan to restore our façade and remove our scaffolding.  Despite the condition of the exterior of the building, the people who gather within are full of passion and purpose.  Together we are committed to renewing the life of our corporate body and repairing our structure.

In the mean time, we strive to be faithful stewards of the building that has been entrusted to us.  To that end, we have entered into strategic partnerships with other organizations that share our commitment to the gospel and our mission to the city, such as a messianic Jewish congregation, a Korean Presbyterian congregation, and the Geneva School in order to make the best possible use of our facility.  Additionally, Central has provided a home for over forty years to the Ziegfeld Club, a charitable, theatrical organization existing to provide assistance to indigent men and women in the show business world of New York City.
